Isn't it better they stop altogether?

How long was it going to be before he was giving the odd spliff to his mates? How did the Old Bill find out anyway? Was it one of his mates that dobbed him in for not being generous enough?

The mature thing to do is just not go there.
I cannot take anyone seriously that has that point of view.

        Educate me, please.

He is growing the stuff at home. That's illegal and getting caught gets you a record and screwed up for life.

Being in possession can cause severe inconvenience and embarrassment at best. (And that's only because the Police can't be arsed to do what they're paid to do because the CPS can't be arsed to do what they're paid to do because the courts can't be arsed to do what they're paid to do because the prisons are full and the fines don't get paid anyway.)

So surely the sensible thing is neither grow nor buy nor use the stuff.

Why is that not a valid, sensible and serious point of view?

Ah yes, but he had a choice which makes this country great. It's what our forefathers fought for. I think it's an infringement of his civil liberties personally.

Well, he was growing 7 plants. 7 plants is a bit excessive.

The court wants to know the extent of his drug use to determine if the lad needs some help before handing down judgment.

I don't think you can get more fair than that. It's not like the court is being unreasonable, so, as the opening poster stated, he made a rather large mistake by defending himself online. Now we're all going to blow this way out of proportion.

Yes, he broke the law (and I'm surprised he got caught and that the cops bothered). He wasn't selling it to anyone else, he wasn't causing any problems in his community so I can't really see why this is anyone else's business. The bloke just wanted a joint or two while watching the football.

Some people think it is morally wrong to take drugs. It doesn't affect them but they feel the need to stick their oar in, nevertheless.

This country has a long and (un)illustrious history of stupid laws. I therefore look forward to the day where brewing your own beer/growing your own tobacco is criminalised. (Actually, I don't really. Live and let live)

Sorry, but your choice to use the term junkie on someone who grows their own weed for personal consumption clearly has you marked out as someone who either has no clue or someone on the wind up. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and say you are on the wind up.

                  You've still not convinced me.

He is so driven by his need for a drug that he has got himself a criminal record.

That kind of need is an addiction He is a drug addict. A junkie is a drug addict.

If you choose, for political reasons, to exclude some of the drugs from the definitions according to your own personal values, that does not change the facts nor the law.

He is a criminal because of his need for his drugs. What's that if not a junkie?
