That's only the second I've seen in a lifetime looking at the skies. Had the camera out last night getting photographs of the moon so missed the opportunity. Would have to have been quick though.

I saw an amazing moon a few years ago when I'd just got home from work. What I thought was a pair of car headlights coming down through the trees on the hill opposite turned out to be a full moon rising over the horizon, and it was an exceptionally clear night.

Feck, feckity feck, my camera battery was flat. But I made a pot of tea and thoroughly enjoyed the show from the balcony*. I haven't seen anything quite like it since.

* this was in January, so it was nippy out there, but well worth it.

Being surrounded by hills it's difficult to get those low horizon shots although winter is the best time of year here. The new lens I bought is performing superbly, can get great shots without a tripod cos of the vibration reduction at full 300mm.

A big difference here in central Europe is that the tree line is much higher than in the UK. This means that a walk up any of the local hills doesn't necessarily bring a decent view. The phrase "Can't see the forest for the trees" springs to mind. Can't see the view either. For that reason winter can be better.

Santa brought me a new compact camera which I am now getting acquainted with. I specifically didn't want a full size SLR (well I did really, but you can't slip one in your pocket). It is unbelievably better than the 8 year old one, and was a third of the price. Image stabilizer, long range zoom and manual mode, plus the ability to shoot HD movies are what grabbed my attention with this model. An external flash is available too.

I definitely need a longer tripod. I have one of those short ones (which again will fit in a jacket pocket), but unless there's a convenient wall handy it's a bit useless.
