I think "great" implies their career, not single performances.

          Another controversial one perhaps?

          Russell Crowe

          Romper Stomper
          Beautiful Mind
          Gladiator
          Amercan Gangster
          The Insider

sure, he has some stinkers in there aswell (virtuosity?!) - but who hasn't? best actor of my (late 30 somethings) generation imho!

I was merely highlighting dome of their best performances.

I should add Anthony Hopkins to the list as well.

              Patrick Stewart

Wonderful in Macbeth and The Tempest.

Grrrr. Gone right off her since she became so anti-British. Ingrate.

Let me add Swimming with Sharks and Se7en.
EDIT: in fact, check out http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000228/ for some corkers
(I have lots of Spacey films!)

I agree about many mentioned here: Tom Hanks, Richard Burton, Johnny Depp, Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, Morgan Freeman, Russell Crowe.

As an aside, Robert Lindsay was magnificent in "Hornblower", I often think how far he has fallen when I see him in those silly dramas or comedies or whatever they are that I don't watch. Ioan Gruffudd excelled in Hornblower too.

Spacey was great in "The Life of David Gale" too.

"21" was quite entertaining although not an acting master class from him.

                      Defo second "The Usual Suspects"

Every respect for Johnny Depp though, he is a great actor but I also respect him for the doing the slightly off the beaten track movies and just following his own taste rather than what Hollywood produces.
