War is not a clean environment that can be analysed piecemeal like dissecting a fly.

Indeed it isn't a clean environment. However, many acts will be analysed piecemeal afterwards under international laws and the Geneva Convention; that isn´t much use to the soldier in combat who may be facing someone trying to kill him, but it is worth bearing in mind for commanding officers who may be held responsible.

Our YouTube videos are of naked prisoners on a leash, with the worst ones kept off youtube. I wonder how long waterboarding would continue to be government sanctioned if the people saw it actually carried out?
