Well a 10 pound bottle of wine seems more substantial than £10 note, particularly as it could be worth more than 10 pounds and no one is to know.Originally posted by d000hg View PostSo is cash considered vulgar? The idea is a token gift, more than a bonus?
My parents tell me that in their day, it was normal to give binmen, postman, etc, small cash 'presents'. Has that completely gone as well?
Binmen and postmen, no, certainly not in London where the turnover is so large and you don't know them. I might if i lived in a rural area.Hard Brexit now!

Not if you are too puny to lift them off the stand they're not.Originally posted by sasguru View PostMotorbikes are very cheap and provide the biggest bang for the buck.
Although I guess for you that is not an issue........with it being virtual and all.

Or maybe you're not confident of your cognitive abilities on a powerful two-wheeler - I don't blame you, I wouldn't if I were you.
I guess you could have been one also..............if you hadn't kept failing the medical!!

Whatever people might find vulgar, and whatever Debrett's might say (which is a guide, and not a rulebook), I feel that a real gift is chosen for the recipient and given in a spirit suitable for the recipient's circumstances. If, for example, a recipient is a muslim, I obviously shan't give him a bottle of wine, but perhaps a gift voucher for a good department store. If I know that the recipient is struggling to get by, a small cash bonus might be suitable, as long as it's accompanied by compliments on that person's work; I wouldn't want the recipient to think I'm giving him/her a tenner simply out of sympathy, which may come across as condescending; better to package the 'gift' as a reward for good work.Originally posted by d000hg View PostSo is cash considered vulgar? I guess you could have been one also..............if you hadn't been far too bright to become cannon fodder for a pittance and earned lots of money instead.
