You were on 19K after 12 years service?
Jeez, what is it you did there?
    Hard Brexit now!

Aye, it's like pre-election budget really, all to make Conservatives get re-elected next year and REALLY cut it deep, you heard it on here first...

Why should those who have stayed at one employer for a long time recieve more redundancy pay than those who have been there a shorter time?

OK, I can think of a couple of arguments like rewarding 'loyalty' (which could be rewarded another way if the employer considers it a desirable trait), but surely this practice is detrimental to employment mobility and can lead people to stick around and end up on the dole when they could start looking for other work?

They've contributed more to the company so from remaining pot of money they deserve to get more rather than less or the same. Statutory redundancy is total tulip in the UK.

            What remaining pot of money?

Anyway, if they're more valuable, why not just pay them a higher salary? Or give them a bonus every few years that's held in a savings account for when they leave?

I was a CNC machinist at an aerospace firm, with shift and a bit of overtime it was more like 30k which is 'mega money' in Somerset.

If company still got some cash left, if not Govt recognises that those workers who did time at the company paid taxes during this term and pay some back accordingly. It's not high amounts anyway.

You should have moved to Swindon, there I hear big mansions can be had for this kind of money...

But then I'd be in Swindon, no amount of money could compensate for that.
