    Hth.

On a serious note MF, I'm sure you got a lot of satisfaction from the process.
I've actually got quite a few people into contracting over the years(most have gone on to do better than me).

It's an attitude. You can recognise it a mile off.

Loads of perms bang on about going contracting and the money, but in truth it's the one's who see it as an opportunity to get on. They're normally flexible, technically gifted, have a can do attitude, don't like politics(and to some extent management), direct, don't always fit in, measured, self starting & self effacing and they make good mates too!

I got stitched over by a French contractor I bought in from another gig a few years back and so I'm very wary about sharing the secrets now.
What happens in General, stays in General.
You know what they say about assumptions!

Believe me I wanted to take the "I'm not work for that attitude" but I had no choice.
        sheesh.
I hope you are back on the good rates now gingerjedi.

I think what I was trying to say is that we have ups and downs, the thought of 100 pd as an up is frightening

Learn what? He's on a modest day rate, doing the job (s)he is currently skilled to do. Training may be something (s)he considers later in his/her contracting career, when it's realistic and affordable.

I'm not really better off now, went perm in May but given notice yesterday along with everyone else.

One thing in my favour, at least I was well prepared to deal with the situation which is more than can be said for every other poor sod around me.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson
