        ta,

        Milan.
Before we put the new forum in place the rules of the forum were no swearing, be nice to each other etc. That didn't fit with the way this place was so the rules were relaxed but this led to some of the more retarded posters complaining about not knowing where boundaries were. So when the new forum was sorted we introduced new rules. In General, LR and Social you can say pretty much what you want but with the proviso that if you go over the top you may get a warning, continue and get an infraction etc.

The swear filter was introduced when we moved the forum from EZBoard to VB, VB had much better controls for removing offensive words and I used that to star out quite a few words, most variations of f u c k and all the c words plus a few racial slurs.

Then I found the string replacement system as well and this was where changing s h i t to tulip came in. There were quite a few others like cock being replaced by noddy but RichardCranium was far too good at pointing out the shortfalls in this system, a male chicken is not a noddyerel etc. There were quite a few others, daffodil was the replacement for the c word I think, would have to hook out some backups to check. Anyway, when the new forum was put up and the rules were relaxed the only filter I put back in at this level was tulip. Not because it was a particularly bad word but on here tulip had become s h i t and it still amused me in a silly way.

As for milan's use of the c word, well I do think that is a step too far and I am more than comfortable with that one still being starred out. You 'orrible little ****. (Just checking it still works as intended...)

And as for w anker, well I did not consider that we don't say w anker on here as it is one of the main censorship words that was banned when we first moved to VB. This was replaced by winker on the string replacement but was wiped with the new forum so saying ****** should result in it being starred out.

milan - as a bit of a part times I am not sure if you were here when MF led an invasion on MumsNet? The cursed more than any bunch of contractors I have ever known and mocked the posters on here's inability to say even the most mediocre swear words. So this and the want to allow you to curse if you want to led to the relaxation of the rules in this part of the forum. I have explained why a few words get either starred out or replaced and I can see how the winker smilie brings the use of swear words on here into question again. The above should answer most of it.

While the winker smilie is on here (for now at least) and the swearing has been relaxed we do not expect to see this short of tulip in the business forums. Personally I don't think allowing swearing or having a winker smilie makes it easier to abuse others or will lead to less creative ways of winding others up. It is just another tool in the arsenal.

As usual I have rambled so as a reward for those of you who could be bothered to read all of this I have put in a new string replacement that will allow you say shit: type : tulip : without the spaces. Enjoy

Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.

Personally I think either swearing should be allowed, or banned. If a word is banned, deliberately evading detection is pretty clearly against the rules and should be clamped down on... of course it needs more admin time but the message would quickly get out. Adding spaces and so on doesn't make words any less offensive and makes a mockery of any rules.

If you're happy making 'insults' that the person you're insulting doesn't find insulting, then carry on. But your usual 'wit' is definitely missing since the end of last week.

How generous! SB hasn't said anything humorous since Jan 2006.
