NZ is a long way from anywhere, and Whangarei is a long way from anywhere that is already a long way from anywhere.

It would be a nice place to retire, or to work as a solicitor, or a teacher, or something like that. It is no place to run a technology business. Any locals with aptitude and ambition will have left.

I would say you could have done the same thing cheaper and had a much better lifestyle in the USA, NZ, AUS, most of Europe plus a whole host of other much more interesting places.

You missed the point - immigrants who got in the 80s to LA or in general to California who then got into IT would have best chances in Silicon Valley that is very close - it was perfect time for it. Obviously it would require moving out of LA, but that's a lot easier to do than moving out of Moscow in 1980s.
