    As reported just the other day here.

    If memory serves correctly, Digital flogged AltaVista at one point but for shares rather than cash. The shares turned out to be worthless.

    A History of AltaVista in which we learn that some lucky chap registered the altavista.com domain name in 1994 and managed to sell it in 1998 for $3.3 million.

    As of 1998, it used 20 multi-processor machines using DEC's 64-bit Alpha processor. Together, the back-end machines had 130 GB of RAM and 500 GB of hard disk space, and received 13 million queries per day.

      I used to like Yahoo and Altavista. I used to find navigating the categories gave better results than searching once you learned your way around them.
