Kann ich meiner zelt im ihren garten aufstellen?"See, you think I give a tulip. Wrong. In fact, while you talk, I'm thinking; How can I give less of a tulip? That's why I look interested." -

It is a nice country. The people are nice. Buuuuuuuuuuuut there are some things to be aware of. Gen up on the local by laws and abide by them.Originally posted by scooterscot View PostARGH
How could this happen? Mrs scooter and I were trying our best to find the down side of moving to Germany and failing. I'd never have thought I'd be thinking along those lines.
We live in a house that is twice the size of our Edinburgh pad yet costs 3 times as less. The social life we have and the friends we've made are fantastic, every other week eating out for a get together rather than getting slaughtered, there's usually some live music on the on.
My earnings compared to what I would need to have a home similar to that I'm living in (140 square meters) are, well one month's net income would almost pay the entire year.
No way could we imagine a similar ratio back home. Oh the food is a bit hit and miss but we can always fly back to the UK for a curry when we need too.
I've not been this confused since the day I got my first Rubik's Cube
I worked with a guy (contractor) who lived out there for 20 years. One day his car started dripping oil. The neighbours all congregated to point and comment. Before he could say "gasket" the authorities were round there like a shot to issue him with an on the spot fine. Someone had grassed him up. Granted I have no idea how well liked he was in the street, but you take my point about by laws I hope.
Go fer it mate. You sound happy.

I agree Germany is better in many ways (even their beer gardens!) but I don't know if I could get used to a country that imposes a "church tax"Speaking gibberish on internet talkboards since last Michaelmas. Plus here on TwitterComment

Nobody has mentioned so far two points:
1) The weather - it has to be the worst in the world. So dull and cold that even Britain's weather in comparison looks like a mediterranean one.
2) The general lack of humour - of course that does not apply to anyone but I'd say that it's more common that you find lack of it there. For me humour in life is important.I've seen much of the rest of the world. It is brutal and cruel and dark, Rome is the light.Comment

Today we I spent 4 euros to take me on 2 trains up to Potsdam, the thermometer hit 26c today, although it's unusual for this time of year.Originally posted by Francko View PostNobody has mentioned so far two points:

I thought that German was one of the easier languages for English speakers to learn - our language is ultimately decended from theirs, is it not?Comment
