Far more pivotal. Either of them could have been lost and the Germans would still have been defeated in the end. Stalin would have seen to that. Might have cost a few million more German and Russian lives, but hey ho. Lives were cheap that end of Europe anyway.Originally posted by AtW View PostWas it as good as Battle of Stalingrad, or Battle of Kursk?
No, had Britain not held out, and become effectively a base for the Yank and Commonwealth forces to come to Russia's aid, the result might have been very different indeed.

Plus, many expected the Germans to conquer the UK fairly easily after defeating the combined French and BEF on the ground. By the time of the Kursk battle, the Germans were obviously at their limit - and although obviously some still expected them to take Stalingrad it was just a glory prize, and wouldn't have made a difference to the outcome of the war. Funnily enough though, I think the battle for Moscow in the first winter was a turning point. I wish we could see clips of German invaders faces coming across "Stalin's Organ" and T34s for the first time.Originally posted by shaunbhoy View PostFar more pivotal. The main things that helped Britain stay in the war:-
1) The English Channel
2) Naval superiority ensuring that the Germans would never have been able to deliver/support any troops they got on the ground
3) Denying the Germans Air superiority as a result of the Battle of Britain
4) The relative success of the Dunkirk evacuation
Pretty much in that order too.“The period of the disintegration of the European Union has begun. And the first vessel to have departed is Britain”Comment
