First of all we don't make the goods, we import them anyway (plasma tellies, cameras, PCs etc). The solution is for everyone to have fewer goods since to buy them, as a country, we are borrowing the money anyway. That's what a balance of payments deficit is. Although that's an economic not an ecological argument it works both ways.Hard Brexit now!

The reason for the strange weather is quite simple....weather, i.e. a blocking system. Probably as a result of a rather unusual extended solar minimum.
You have to distinguish between climate and weather.
As xoggoth says pointless shutting down power stations unless you want to sit in the dark, especially when it has no impact on the climate any way.I'm alright JackComment

Define "strange stuff"
I'd be more surprised if records were never broken, we've not actually been measuring climate with great accuracy for that long
Wet and Humid in the UK... not that unusual during a hot British summerCoffee's for closersComment

I can imagine a scenario where SasGorus kids file for adoption on the grounds that their dad made them wear tee shirts , even when it was freezing, just to 'show em the world is definately getting warmer', and crying when all the palm trees he planted in the back garden died of frostbite
