I'm from a well spoken middle England family and the idea of free milk does seem just one big waste of money and time, well 95% of the time.

My cousin who is a teacher in a school in one of the less desirable areas recently told me of children coming to school after eating a bag of crisps for breakfast and having last nights cold chips for their packed lunch. Those children are the 5% that would benefit if even to stop them from getting rickets. You can not blame the children for their parents.

In summary, a waste of money for most but so what. They are children and it will do them some good.
They could just target at the schools where it would make a difference ... at my school, most of the free milk went down the drain.

I hated being forced to drink half a pint of milk every day. Thatcher did us all a favour.

Is milk really the best thing? Why not give kids fruit?
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

It would have to be "Cameron Cameron Macaroon Snatcher" so we'll now what's happening if Labour announce
free Macaroon to school children once they are back in power.

I take the point about only providing milk for the greatest need but life just is not that simple sometimes. Some schools will have a 90% take up, try explaining that to the little 5 year old that she can't have any milk.
Then some schools will have a 10% take up and these children will be classed as the poor. Then there is the quango set up to administer the system.
Sometimes it's best to just let a little socialism out and just let those who want it have some milk.

Milk is closest to being the perfect food from a nutritional point of view. You could survive on milk alone for a considerable period - after all, that's what it is "designed" for.

The problem is that milk can give you a good chunk of your daily fat requirement (unless you drink semi-skimmed), so if you're eating any other fatty foods, you're gonna put on weight.

They do give free fruit at my kids schools at break time and have been doing for years now.

I wonder if you can get a glass of milk in prison?

                  Menelaus?
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

The irony with the whole Thatcher / milk snatcher business is that Churchill said, “There is no finer investment for any community than putting milk into babies.”

The modern Tory makes him look like a 'big state' social democrat.

                      Is it Halal milk?

When I saw the title of this thread I was hoping the evil witch had finally kicked the bucket.
