I chap at work sums this up very well. If you need it from PC World you must accept the fact that you are paying a "must have it now" surcharge.

DIY shops are the same. Buy plumbing or electrical goods and you pay at least three times the amount you will pay at a specialist supplier.

No. I advocate competitive market economy, in cases when its not compatitive it is acceptable for Govt to regulate monopolies - either break them up like it happened with AT&T or use price controls like it happens with BT.

This is acceptable practice - the only question is whether there is actually a monopoly. Dixons argue that they do not have monopoly, however their pricing structures and the fact that they are the only major IT shop on high street clearly shows that they are a monopoly - extremely high rip off prices is a clear sign of that, if it was competitive they would not have been able to charge 3-4 times more than in other places.

Is Dixons a monopoly? It fecking is - they have such a huge grip on suppliers that often suppliers have different SKU just for Dixons - supplying it at cheaper price than to anybody else!

Hence, need for price controls or breakup.

You're supposed to be running businesses for goodness sakes - what can't you get a trade account?

I have accounts with suppliers but I still shop around.

DIY is very competitive in my view - there is HomeBase and B&Q next to that PC World, this already provides pretty good choice - tell me where is the nearest equivalent of PC World? It does not really exist! Which is why PC World is an effective monopoly where as DIY market is actually competitive with at least 3 major players in it.

I bought some stuff in B&Q and HomeBase and guess what - price differential for the same products is not that high! But look at PC World and its fking amazing what they can get away with - this is a certain sign of a monopoly, I'd say so even if I did not know how Dixons operates with suppliers.

They are controlled - by people doinf exactly what you did - walking in and goign FFS thats expensive and walking out again.

If everyone thought that the price would go down. Obviously they don't as PCW make shedloads every year.

If the people paying the money are happy then leave well alone, its different if the only supplier overcharges but that plainly isn't the case...

Next you'll be saying that contractors should be regulated since a permie could do the same job cheaper!!!!

But it seems you ARE the PUBLIC.

If you were a business (which you all are, aren't you - otherwise you'd be paying the IR35 tax) then you would have a trade account with a major trade supplier.

They don't care if you only buy one USB cable a month, so long as your accounts qualify you as a bona-fide trader.
