How do we feel about the market at the moment now the economy is picking up. Do you think the days of long periods on the bench are over? Are there any long term benchees here? Just wondering because my gig finishes in August.

I'm getting a steady trickle of calls, but I'm not on the market and I can't say if they are all genuine. Overall I'd say the market was okay but not great.

If JobStats is anything to go by, which it isn't (because JobStats is a lazy arse), then we're probably approaching 'average' times.

So if you really can't get a contract right now, and you're not being stubborn, then you should think about perm or plan b/c.

If you are tulip or asking for too much "because you made 700 a day in 2008 so you're worth 700" then you're ****ed.

If you're good and willing to compromise by about 15% then you've got no worries at all.

In the days ab-initio was niche I made 1000+, in the normal good old days it was 600+ ... now I accept i'm in with the majority, and in the 400 to 500 bracket. But never been out of work... because I'm really good at my job and don't turn up at interviews (or headhunting dinners) and try to blag my way through.

This is what I keep hearing. Trouble is, anyone can write a half-decent CV, so getting noticed can be hard.

Given the tulip i've interviewed recently there's no excuse for being on the bench.

So true - I've been recruiting for a project and am suprised at the lack of quality in the candidates .
I suspect it's due to agency wanting higher margins but the PSL in place at client Co makes it hard to see all the candidates rather than those the agency muppets forward.
After I'd rejected the last crop I received a terse email from said agency suggesting that it my requirements that were flawed rather than their in house filtering.

Talking to a long standing agent last week and he has stopped using Jobserve due to being overwhelmed with ropey CVs and candidates.

I reckon the market in my game is defo on the up, there are various projects kicking off that have been held back. I'm still benched mind, but being fussy on location.

I haven't really got anywhere with it to be honest ! The amount of recomendations a person has seems to be inverse to how good they are at their job. It has also been hijacked by agents, I don't think that was the original idea.
