It is easy for people our age to have missed how much the world changed while we were growing up.

I would like to think that all discrimination now is completely frowned upon but when I started at university in the eighties it was drummed into us that black people and gay people were OK and it is easy now to forget that it had to be.

This message took much longer to reach the provinces that I grew up in. Less than ten years ago a gay couple moved into a house over the road from the local pub. The locals would be perfectly civil to their faces but behind their backs would come out with the "backs to the wall lads" comments.

So you can leave Stephen alone, his memories go back to a time that was more hostile for him although he is wrong to associate that with the political parties.

It is not his sexual preferences that I object to but his self indulgent pseudo left wing patronising of the less well off that is so repellent

Look, the fact that I think that Stephen Fry is a pompous fairy has nothing to do with his sexual preference.

I realise that you must be running short on material but change the f**king record.

OK. I have been out of the country a while now so it is quite possible that there is a side to this I know nothing about.

I wouldn't have formed that opinion of him from everything I saw before I left but I will go and investigate.

The DVDs of old QI shows that are posted to me are the only entertainment I get now in this cultural desert.

Your apology for labelling me as a homophobe is accepted.

How on earth do you draw that conclusion?

I don't think that you are prejudiced in any way.

But you could avoid using the word fairy to describe people.

If noone votes then how can you justify spending any money on the next election?
