It is easy for people our age to have missed how much the world changed while we were growing up.

I would like to think that all discrimination now is completely frowned upon but when I started at university in the eighties it was drummed into us that black people and gay people were OK and it is easy now to forget that it had to be.

This message took much longer to reach the provinces that I grew up in. Less than ten years ago a gay couple moved into a house over the road from the local pub. The locals would be perfectly civil to their faces but behind their backs would come out with the "backs to the wall lads" comments.

So you can leave Stephen alone, his memories go back to a time that was more hostile for him although he is wrong to associate that with the political parties.
