If this is a serious consideration then, IMHO, it is a step back.
MF, no offence, but maybe if you hadn't run off some of the regular posters who contributed positively to the board we wouldn't be having this debate!

If you want a busier more exciting General forum then you need characters.
Again has been mentioned before, it's a differing perception of busier and more exciting. If constant fighting, bullying and trolling excites you, then fine you are right you need characters. Saying that I wouldn't describe people hiding behind internet anonymity and trolling internet forums for thir selfish pleasure as 'characters' though. Each to their own.
I didn't find that type of content exciting so not for me. Sorry.
