For filtering fine particles you could draw the air down a narrow mucus lined pipe coated with little hairs (call then cillia for the sake of argument) and every now and then expel the mucus forcefully in a sort of reverse thrust convulsive splutter.

That's because either you incapacited the opposition or the fact that the gas was expelled and expanded, thus pushing against the inside walls if your intestine propelling you in the opposite direction to that of the thrust.

I think it was the first actually. In fact I remember one race where I caused two false starts, thereby eliminating one competitor who threw a hissy fit in protest at 'distraction tactics and unsporting noises'.
