Try to avoid getting a taxi from the airport (80 Euros )
Trastevere is very nice (fairly untouristy) and a good place to eat, stroll around etc.
Pantheon is amazing, Colosseum is very busy at weekends, and closes early (3.30pm last entry iirc). Avoid the guided tours, get one of the cheapo guide books and wander round on your own.
Climb up the hill behind the (hideous imho) Vittorio Emmanuel monument (Piazza Venezia) for great views.

If you fly to Fiumicino you need to take the train to Termini station (mind that the last one is at 23 something), if you fly to Ciampino there is a bus to Termini station. Alternatively you should go from ciampino airport to Ciampino town by bus and then take a train but that will be a little difficult with no knowledge of the transport system or the language at all.

I went in October for a week, and found the following,

1. I stayed near the Central station, its VERY noisey around there, even with double glazing I had to sleep with my arms over my ears. If you too are staying in the same area, ask for a room thats at the back of the hotel or aleast 2 floors up.

2. At restaurants question the bill, I found most places hand wrote the order and bill so half the time you couldnt work out if it was right or wrong. I found in some restaurants I was charged a tax and others I wasnt, never worked out why but I recon I was being ripped off, couldnt be arsed to argue.

3. Get some decent tourest guides, most of the main tourest attractions had crap information.


4. Go to the vactican the day its not the audience with the pope unless you want to see him. I went that day and it was kicking off in the queue into the vactican, people elbowing each other, getting stressed, nuns fainting.

Apart from that it was all good, but I did note I didnt see as many fit italian women as I thought I would, and wasnt too impressed with the Pizza's to be honest.

been to Rome - what every you do, do take a horse a cart trip round the old town - is the wife going or is this a business trip - I know "other" places to visit.
