[quote=AtW;1099085]Without price comparison sites you would not have first hand appreciation of how rip off different insurance companies are: it gives you range and price point to haggle about.

I've been using Direct Line since ~1999

I used to spend each year phong around for a cheaper quote, direct line always sent me a renewal quote that was cheaper than anyone else without me having to haggle.

Since the rise of the price comparison sites... Direct line still insist on sending me renewal quotes which are cheaper than everyone else.. and they aren't even on the comparison sites

That's not uncommon at all - price comparison sites however play perfect role in giving range, even if it's only for you to feel good when paying "only" £400 per year when top quote is like £2000

I just booked a holiday with expedia UK.

        Flights+Hotel+car = £2400 said the expedia lady - 'ok - good'

        ...credit card details etc etc

at the point of confirmation she says 'ooops its just gone up £100'

I said 'wachamean gone up - you just gave me a price 2 minutes ago that we agreed upon - offer and acceptance and all that.

She said 'its a live system and prices can go up'

she blamed the airline but either way I thought 'offer and acceptance' was *the* cornerstone of the sales contract.

        WTF?

...yes, I paid it - family exited - I was close to telling them(expedia) to FO but.,..

Do you not query them? Directline send me renewals every year but they are always more expensive than the quote I get from their own website, just ring and say you'd rather have the website quote.

I don't mind them trying it on with a more expensive quote as the suckers who don't bother checking are subsidising my insurance.

I will never use 'confused.com' since the adverts irritate the 5hit out of me... 'da-da'...
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

10 or 20 years ago we might have been expected to be outraged that customer loyalty is rewarded by getting shafted, whether by your bank or by car insurance brokers. But today it seems second nature to expect to be ripped off by everyone.

My excess is more than the website allows you to enter, so it's effectively impossible for me to directly compare my quote with the online quote
