Peter Houston insists referee Dougie McDonald was wrong on both occasions to award Rangers two penalties in Sunday's 3-3 Scottish Cup tie at Ibrox.

"I am disappointed and I just wonder if the penalties would have been given at the other end. I hope they would have been," said the Dundee United manager.

"Dougie is an honest referee in normal circumstances, I think he is one of the best in Scotland.

"But I was disappointed that he got there early to give the penalty kicks."

With United leading by an Andis Shala goal, Rangers were awarded a penalty in the 34th minute when the visitors' goalkeeper, Dusan Pernis, appeared to foul striker Kenny Miller.

Television replays, however, suggest that Pernis did get a touch on the ball but the incident happened at such a pace that McDonald had a split second to make a very difficult call.

Pernis was yellow carded and Rangers leading goalscorer Kris Boyd slotted home the spot kick to level the score.

"Dusan Pernis got a touch on the ball, and Kenny, with the momentum of two bodies coming together, fell over Dusan because he was on the ground," said Houston on BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound programme on Monday.

"I think Dusan got the ball with his foot and the forward motion of Kenny Miller, who had knocked it a yard or so further forward than he wanted to, made Dusan decide to go for it with his feet."

And the United manager added: "The second one, if we are going to give penalty kicks for that, we'll get penalty kicks left, right and centre on a regular basis.

"I don't think for a minute Sean Dillon deliberately pushed Kris Boyd.

"Kris kept his eye on the ball and they bumped into each other.

"I'm not blaming Kris Boyd at all for going down easily. He didn't have any eye contact with Sean Dillon, he was looking at the ball."

"I've got to be honest and say I felt they were two soft penalties

Watch that video and tell me honestly you think Dusan touched the ball with his foot first before touching Miller.

Okay, it's official. Scottish referees do make mistakes.

Rangers just get on and deal with it though.

Thompson's challenge was quite simply atrocious and the fact that they expected to get away with that is simply a sign of how much they have been getting away with all season.

Studs showing going through a man from behind at full pelt on a stationary player, yes that is not a sending off

Agree with you Thomson should have walked, thought Wilson's was a bit harsh. However, we got nothing the whole game. Very suspicious, seems like someones not been paying their lodge fees.

Wilson's was a 50 50. Could have gone either way, the cardigan though otherwise though.
