Your relationship is a 24x7x365 thing that needs constant effort. If you think one token gesture on a day you have absolutely no choice in is gonna fix anything you are sadly mistaken.
Man you HAVE to do something today even if you don't want to. To me that is the most unromatic commercialised meaningless gesture that exists.
Throw her a bunch of flowers you bought last week, tell her she means more to you than one day and you show her your love 24x7 and not by paying through the nose for crap on one day of the year. She may not be totally happy with this as women arn't but in the long run it will mean much more to her......
