Zere vos vonce a flourishing German community in Manchester, which contributed a great deal to the city’s development, building factories, concert halls, libraries and starting up the Halle Orchestra along the way. In the early 20th century many Germans left England as they suffered discrimination as WW1 got started, some people blindly assuming that German immigrants would support the other side. Others, like my family, Anglicised their names to avoid trouble and ceased to gather in German community groups. A better known example is the Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha family who changed their name to ‘Windsor’ in 1917. Anyway, since the German community died out Manchester’s become a bit of a tuliphole. And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014 -

Strange that it's the countries that had, and would have again, the weakest national currencies that want to ditch the Euro. Or not so strange perhaps.
As for the Germans, many educated Brits in WWI were opposed to the war on the grounds that we were fighting a culture superior to our own.Step outside posh boyComment
