I met someone a couple of days ago who tried to convince me that Peter Mandelson is an excellent politician who does a great job.

I was so gob smacked all I could say was, "I'm sorry we'll have to agree to differ. I don't wish to discuss it".

This bloke is a solicitor, so (on paper at least), not an idiot.

I think it's quite plausible that Mandelson is an excellent politician, the problem is that he is not an elected politician.

Maybe it depends on your definition of politician? If it means lying, conniving weasel then it's very apt.
