Yes, but I was assuming that you would have an official place of residence, e.g. in the UK, but not necessarily spend any time there. The question is, do you need a place that really is your residence/home/abode?

I cant get to my chosen destination easily, Oz , because we are too old, but I was toying with the idea of spending six months in Oz and six months elsewhere, using the travel visa. But then you would lack a firm base

That's not too far from my thoughts actually. One one hand, I too am too old. On the other, maybe I do not need to plan my whole life right now. So I could see spending large chunks of time in different places. It's what I did as a young contractor anyway, and I loved it. Problem is getting partner on board. I would think of 6 months in Europe working, and 6 months e.g. in Oz, not working.

You would have an official fixed abode in EU, which would also be an actual place (i.e. not just your brother's address for official purposes), and you would probaly store stuff there.

You might well also have a place year-round in Oz, but only spend 6 months there. Personally I might want not to store much stuff there, since there is always the risk of not being allowed back in sometime (I knew someone that happened to in the US: he came back for a family funeral without applying for re-entry first, and was refused re-entry to the US, with his home and stuff all sitting inside the US).

But you could rent out your Oz (or whatever) place when not there. And possibly your EU place too, if you organised it.

Now, I don't know if Oz will let you do this repeatedly; NZ seems to, subject to this 9 months per 18 thing.

Owning more than one place in 2/3 continents and renting them out for 6 months seems like a nightmare to an ex-BTLer like me. It's a lot of work.
I think you need a base and rent places in Oz when you feel like - and rather than have an over-leveraged mortgage I would get something more manageable.
Have you looked at Berlin - properties of high quality are dead cheap there and its handy for continental working.

Ah I see you're angling for village idiot of the day.
What do you know about Berlin?
I've been every year for the last 20 years and love it there.
There's no work there but its cheap, the lifestyle is the best of any capital city in Europe, and its close enough to centres of work like Frankfurt.
If you wanted a base in EU while you spent most time outside it would be perfect, considering a studio can be had for £20-30K.

Now if you stop dribbling, there must be a tape to change somewhere.

There's a good electronics shop in Berlin.

I agree, personally I would rent "away" (e.g. Oz) for 6 months at a time if poss, and rent permanently in EU in order to have a fixed address and a store. In fact, don't try to set up perm res in Oz: go there some years, NZ some, Thailand; Argentina, whatever .....

I'd take Frankfurt except it's not that appealing for me; or Heidelberg (good train connections, flights via Frankfurt). Darmstadt is nice Or Amsterdam. But again we're talking about the weekly commute And a studio in a city might not be big enough for me now.

Not to mention very cheap property by European capital standards.
