I generally have 6 months off every 3 years or so. When I am interviewed and this comes up, I have told the interviewer I put my feet up. They all said they wished they could do that and I got the gig each time.
So I sell it as one of the reasons I contract and that turns it into a positive rather than a negative...Older and ...well, just older!!Comment

I took June 2008 to January 2009 off. I was asked about it (more by agents than potential clients) and explained that I'd had a month's break, then spent time improving my skills in a number of new technology areas and working on several projects of my own. It wasn't a problem for anybody I interviewed with.
