A place I was at always sent a nasty letter warning that gifts to senior staff would be taken as unnaceptable bribery. A bit of nonsense I was of course very happy to adhere to.

As a manager I was once frowned upon for slipping one of the secretaries a gift at the Christmas party
Some contracts might not allow you to. I once had a clause in a contract that stated must avoid anything that could be deemed as reward to those who hire me or extend my contract. This could include taking them out for drinks or buying gifts for them. Buying a manager a gift is a bit dodgy unless the entire team are doing a secret santa thang. People are likely to talk. I`d rather buy a gift on departure if I really liked them, but buy gifts for others also!
