What about the blokes being saddled with wives from the subcontinent to keep their family happy but not really wanting to be stuck with someone with no understanding of life in the west? I think there was an article about that on the BBC website at some point in the last nine months.

One time last year I was in a takeaway in East London. When I arrived there was a local girl in there with her new imported husband. She was of Indian origin but had clearly grown up in East London. She was confident, bubbly and gobby and struggled to keep the veil over her face while her rustic looking husband didn't really know what was going on.

After they left the (Kurdish) takeaway owner was incandescent about how disrespectful she had been to her husband but I felt sorry for her because I wondered how long her new husband would put up with her behaviour.

Yes Gonzo they get saddled with hick wives and an average of 12,000 quid. That's not bad money for a shag and a slightly guilty conscience.

The whole "spanning two different cultures" issue is more complicated than I want to deal with but this is all new for second generation British Asians.

I think I read another piece about the plight of British Asian women struggling to find husbands because parents would rather their sons married women from home, not women that have grown up exposed to western culture.

I wonder if it's a regional thing? In my (admittedly limited) experience the British Asian girls were beating the local talent off with a stick. Still - I got to go to a couple of cracking weddings in the end
