To answer your question from another thread, the fishing has been mixed this year.

On the trout front we only got out twice to the reservoir at Battle. The second trip was fairly successfully with 5 in the bag but an annoyed eldest complaining every time I hooked another. "I'm doing the same as the old git but I'm not catching anything!" The fact he can't cast cleanly more than 5 yards might have been a factor.

Because if the distance and cost of going fluff chucking, I've been concentrating on fishing the local river. Only about 12 yards wide at its widest but I've enjoyed walking it and trying to find the best spots. This year hasn't produced anything big, I've actually failed to land a single carp or tench - very hit and hold stuff due to the lilies etc - but I've winkled out some good bream and chub.

Due to the current layoff, I try to get down there a couple of times a week for a few hours. At the moment I have my eye on a 5lb chub and I will probably do some piking when the weather really gets cold.

How have you, or anyone else for that matter, done on the angling front?

Last time I caught a pike - about 20 years ago - we gave it to the Jamaican lady who lived next door who seasoned it, cooked it and we all had some. One of the best fishing experiences - my old man actually had me use the preist on it (I think thats what they are called).

Haven't been fishing in about 10 years but maybe one day would give it another go - probably fly fishing this time though as had never fished with flies before.

Only eaten Pike the once, in that revolving high rise restaurant in Berlin.

Be warned, fly fishing is not the easiest and takes a fair while to master. Not cheap either.

Next February my mate is bringing his own boat so I expect to spend most of the time (weather permitting) downing beers and catching fish. Mostly we catch mackerel, grouper and what are known as "grunts" but have caught everything from Moray eels to sharks.

I've eaten Pike a time or two with mixed results

I had an Uncle Jock who loved eating Perch but I think he'd been half starved as a kid in the back streets of Glasgow.

I've not managed a trip for a few years, even when benched I must make an effort this year but I'm not so sure the Mrs will see the benefits it will bring to the household. I tried fly fishing but found it a bit chuck it and chance it compared to proper fishing.

hi oh.
i have managed to get a fair bit of fishing in this season, on the tummel, the tay, the deveron and the lochy mainly. it's been pretty hard going for most of the year but most times we were getting fish. not many grilse around this year, mainly bigger summer salmon. the trout fishing in the hill lochs has been quite good too. i got meself a new 6-piece, 9' trout rod, a redington which is actually quite a handful. very fast action. i find a 16' b&w norway easier to handle!

Indeed - we only keep what we are going to eat. My mate's missus makes pate from the mackerel (they call it "fish dip") and we have huge deep fried grouper fillets in hamburger buns with hot chilli sauce and salad - what they refer to as a "fish sandwich". Sounds odd but with freshly caught fish, just lightly fried they taste amazing.

Sorry...I'm more a sea drinker than a sea fisherman though - and definitely a fair weather one.

I see your river is a touch wider then the one I splash in.

Blimey, size pieces! I have a sage xp and I too think it is too fast for me. Beautiful rod but I should have gone with a 6 weight or something a little more forgiving.

I'll see if I can sort out some photos.
