Parts of Glasgow East are comparable to the third world, some parts have male life expectancy in the early 50s, completely removed from the world and vote Labour because they have been brought up in Labour families.

Aren't they just prolonging their own misery? Surely if the MP has been from the same party since time began and life has only got worse it's time to try someone else?

Does nobody there ever say 'hey guys, we've been doing this socialism thing for a long time now and we're not really doing very well out of it; shall we try that tory capitalismy thingy; they're all rich, so perhaps it works'.

How can a place be a complete tuliphole for years and keep on returning the same MP and the same council? Do people like living in tulipholes?

What's the causal relationship? Forgive the stereotypes for a moment for the sake of illustrating a point. Do rich people vote liberal or tory, speak 'proper-like', dress smartly, attach importance to education and try to keep away from trouble with the police just because they're rich, or are they rich because of how they behave?

They vote Labour because it is still seen as being the party that does most for them. They are not going to vote for the Tories because they would like to cut the benefits they rely on. So while it's tulip for them under labour it is seen as being more tulip under the tories. It's just turkeys not voting for christmas.

Yep, but let's just imagine that a tory barsteward MP has lots of contacts in business and could persuade lots of companies to go and set up in Glasgow East; he'll be around Westminster promoting their cause and addressing their concerns so as to create the kind of business environment where they can flourish. Along with a tory local council who will prevent unnecessary burdens on business, this could actually help create employment in the area.

If I have to decide where to set up an office or a factory, I'm not likely to go somewhere that I think people will start 'industrial action' at the drop of a hat. I'd rather go somewhere that people clearly want to make the best of a chance.

Yes, many people do in fact like living in tulipholes. Bizarre, and I do know a few. They come visit me, and say something along the lines: "What a nice house, what a nice view, but I couldn't live here, you're so far from the shops, you're snowed in in the winter, and because you own the road, the council don't grit it."

Becoming rich/not rich, really is a toss of the coin, it is truly random. There are the odd cases where a causal relationship might be inferred, but if everyone started out from the same line, I defy anyone to tell.

I agree that there´s a lot of luck involved, but to some extent you have to go out looking for the lucky breaks; that means it's surely better to try and emulate the people who've done well instead of sticking to the same old behaviour patterns.
