Rage and Doom 4 will use the new "id Tech 5" game engine.Originally posted by AtW View PostDoom 3 was tulip...
Not exactly sure how that differs from id Tech 1 to 4; but they have been working on it for a couple of years, and the screenshots look pretty slick.Work in the public sector? Read the IR35 FAQ hereComment

They can use Range One Gazillion engine, the point is that Doom was so successful not just because of cutting edge engine at the time - this was required, but not entirely necessary, it was the game play, first serious network gaming etc - Doom 3 is total tulip despite top 3D engine. Carmack realised that and that's why (among other things) he sold iD software recently.Originally posted by OwlHoot View PostRage and Doom 4 will use the new "id Tech 5" game engine.

Fair point. I always reckoned Raven software (to name just one example) have generally turned out better games with Id Software's engines than Id themselves.Originally posted by AtW View PostThey can use Range One Gazillion engine, the point is that Doom was so successful not just because of cutting edge engine at the time - this was required, but not entirely necessary, it was the game play, first serious network gaming etc - Doom 3 is total tulip despite top 3D engine. Well, Raven did ok, but Heretic, Hexen was not particularly good IMO, Soldier of Fortune (first) was nice though, but that was on Quake 2 engine.Originally posted by OwlHoot View PostFair point. System Shock was released at the time of first DOOM, very bad timing but it was excellent game, also Ultima Underworld was really unlucky, poor engine but top gameplay
