Ignorance of the law is no defence.

Besides, there are plenty of free games out there (there are for PC users, and I guess the same is true for console lovers as well).

Failing that, there are low to negligible cost hobbies as well.
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

£50 for an online game which you might play for months (or years) on end without needing any other games is not much at all to ask even if you are 16.

Sad thing is, he's not ignorant of the law - he knows it's illegal, knows it's wrong, and does it anyway.

If you can't afford the £50 then wait a few months and buy it used
          Or
Rent first, most games are crap anyway and not worth the hassle

A lot of it is peer pressure though. The "latest game" for some youngsters is a must have, all your mates are talking about it, and you can end up being billy-no-mates.

Doesn't make it right of course, but I can understand some motivations behind it.

If you can't deal with your mates bragging about having the latest games when you are 25 and working, then you need to re-prioritise your life.

There was a story yesterday. Link

Online reports suggest that as many as 600,000 gamers may have been affected.
MS know how to hit them hard, ban the console on the release day of one of the most anticipated games of the decade.

I used to pirate games in my Amiga days but you can get new releases for £30 if you look hard enough. Xbox is a luxury, not a right.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

Well, it does seem that a lot of the "benefits generation" seem to have one or a Playstation, along with their fancy trainers, tabs and beers.

Quite how they afford it is beyond me.

OTOH, if it keeps them off the streets, then perhaps it's a digital "opiate of the masses" and one which we shouldn't begrudge them.

The alternative is letting them out in the open, usually with disastrous consequences to life, limb and property.
