APPEAL FOR TURNER TO TAKE UP BRUSH AGAIN
Famous artist JMW Turner is being encouraged to come out of retirement to mark the opening of a gallery named after him in Margate.
The Turner Contemporary is due to open in 2007 but critics have pointed out that the artist himself has not put brush to canvas for more than 150 years.
Art critics are hoping he might come up with a new landscape in time for the centre's opening in three years.
Joseph Mallord William Turner has many of his celebrated works on show in galleries around the world, but is not thought to have come up with a new painting since 1851.
Rolf Harris
Critics have begun to point at the prolific work-rate of artists such as Tracy Emin, Damian Hirst and Rolf Harris and wonder why Turner has been so quiet of late.
Art Krittick, a history of art lecturer at the University of Margate, said: "There's no denying some of Turner's paintings are among the best you could ask to see, but his work has definitely tailed off in recent years.
"While artists like Rolf Harris, Tony Hart and Bill Tidy have continued to produce some excellent pieces, we've heard nothing from Turner.
"He produced so many fine paintings in the first half of the 19th century and then just stopped, it's hard to understand why.
"Maybe he felt he couldn't go on producing work to such a high standard so stopped - a bit like Steps splitting up when they did - but we'd all like to see a new portrait from him I think.
"I've wondered in the past whether he would enter something for the Turner Prize given that it's named after him, but he hasn't, perhaps the new centre being given his name will tempt him out of retirement."
