I dont want to stay in a shed, I want to stay in an idyllic cosy place surrounded by great views. We've just got back from a relaxing 2 weeks of 39C in Oman including a few days in a spa and have decided that we want to spend this new year in Edinburgh mainly as I've been before and loved it and she's never been. As we have a few days free afterwards we thought a short trip to the lower scottish highlands would be nice.
If the weather is as you say going to be dark, rainy and miserable that's when a log fire, some good food and wine and the fact that the passion in our relationship has not been lost or soured somewhere on a swindon roundabout comes into play and I'm sure we can think of ways to occupy ourselves
I'm looking for any recommendations for a lodge or other hideaway/hidden gem of a location in Scotland in winter/early january.
Plans are to spend 3 days in Edinburgh over Hogmanay/New Year which we have accomodation booked for and then 4 days somewhere in the lower Scottish Highlands.
Only criteria is that it should be somewhere picturesque and no more than 6hrs drive from Manchester. Im thinking of a log cabin or nice inn with log fire and a great view that's nearby to a village that has a good pub restaurant.
Any ideas?
Some friends of mine went here recently, they couldn't rate it highly enough!
yes your right, taking an idea suggested by gf and then acting on it by finding somewhere idyllic and romantic is definitely the quickest way to lose a person..
remind me to ask for your pearls of wisdom with any further relationship guidance I may need
Stay away from the west coast, the weather will be crap and most stuff will be closed down for the winter anyway, travel can be a nightmare at that time of year as well. The drive to Oban from Glasgow is about 2 1/2 hours but than can turn into 6 if something goes wrong. You won't be getting any views with the rain that comes down there.
Best go up east where it will be dryer and most probably snowing, try Pitlochry where there A9 will always be open and only takes a couple of hours from Glasgow.
I stay in the Moulin Inn hotel a couple of times a year where the bar has 2 fire places, a brewery round the back and the food is good. The bar has won AA and CAMRA best in britain awards. I go walking during the day then drink about 15 pints of their beer when I get back. The rooms ain't amazing but there are a few better hotels in the area within walking distance. I don't really go there to sit in the room though.
I always find that if you are cold, even very cold, there is always stuff you can do to warm up (esp if you have a romantic bird with you)
If you are too warm, there isnt much you can do and it can be a real killer.
I took the missus to Greece ten years ago and spent most nights soaking towels in water and slapping them on her back, then fanning her with them.
Bloody nightmare
