As much as he wants to. So long as he maintains the margin in his account he can hold the position no matter how much it is under water.
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

Max it reached during the period represented by the candle (appears if higher than the price at end/beginning).

I presume if I go too far into negative it will just close for me and I'll be left with 0??? Is that correct?

yes. Unless it is leveraged. If leveraged 100 times you could be asked to put in 10.000 - nothing serious.

                  From their web page:

"Spread betting allows you to make exceptional profits but losses can soon mount up too. That is why paddypowertrader offers one of the industry’s most innovative risk management systems. Whenever you place a bet we will automatically create a stop loss order for you, which will protect you from major losses without capping your potential gains. Of course you can alter this stop loss order whenever and however often you like. However please note that, as markets can gap, stop loss orders are not guaranteed and you can lose more than your original deposit"
