Aren't things meant to get cheaper over time... everyone is throwing satellites into space and that used to be the very edge of what was possible/affordable.

You'd have thought in 40 years research into unmanned space flight would have come up with something a bit more affordable for manned space travel.

Aliens have set up bases on the dark side. All sorts of them. So it could be dangerous.

It does make me jolly cross when the naysayers say "Spend in on Planet Earth, solve our own problems first".

The problem there being that there will always be problems to spend the money on, on Planet Earth, hence deferring investment until a later date is simply not possible.

It is perfectly feasible to run concurrent programs around the planet and in space, and the two have been beneficial to each other during the past (Space Technology that filters down to terrestial consumer technology, for example).

As a race, we need to keep our options open and not put all our eggs in one basket. Space exploration and travel is a step towards that goal.
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
