It's probably more than just some extra, unnecessary work (e.g. having a crap time in her personal life)

Be a bit kind chaps; doesn't sound as though the admin. lady needs a ticking off for leaving early. It seems more from what cojak wrote that she takes her job seriously and that she's had her wasted (which OP recognises). I would say that the kiss & make up route is the way to go and a good relationship is therefore maintained.

There are many things which could be going wrong in her personal life and if all was fine and dandy at home she may have shrugged off this incident, but for her to get so upset indicates to me that maybe she has other things bothering her.
so yes apologise, but you don't know what else is happening with her and the tears may not have been about work at all.

I don't understand why some people behave like serial killers at work. Do they think that people are not people at work? Don't they think others have problems and feelings during these hours just like them but don't reserve them?

I am not saying that you are wrong, Cojak (as I still don't know what happened and if the reaction is fair or not) but I am just amazed at how so many people think that they can behave as total tossers at work and how easily they justify themselves.

Chances are that the same people are probably as lenient in justifying their conscience in many other occasions in life. Overall I do think indeed that the most succesfull people at work are the ones who don't have any moral constraint when dealing with other people (i.e. top managers, ever met any sensitive one?).

Edit: in addition to that, if I had a pound for every minute I'd worked on something that turned out to be a waste of time I certainly wouldn't still be working.
