Much as I applaud you for doing the right thing, I assume that it was a gray? It may be a forlorn hope but more action needs to be taken to stop them from intruding upon red squirrel territory. Grays carry a pox that is lethal to reds. And reds are not only less destructive, they're cuter by a mile.

Reds relied on forests that were mainly cut down in this country - maybe 100 years ago strict controls on greys could have done something, however right now it is too late. Thankfully greys are also cute and they spent more down on the ground visible to people, this is natural stuff - one species happen to replace the other, in any case humans who have caused destruction of so many species have no right to genocide greys just because they reds are native: both species are native to this planet.

I am more concerned about dogs - in the park where mine live a fair few of my squirrels disappeared, some of the best trained too

Thats because you trained them not to be wary of humans and to expect food when they approached them. Gives the dogs a much better chance iof catching them.

They were still afraid of others and only got down to me when I used special whistle that I taught them.

There was squirrel poisoning 2 years ago - some scum did that, killed one of my favourites

I remember handfeeding squirrels in the local park with chips in the mid-80s. Grays are quite bold. Though I of course accept you have a special connection to them with your whistles; any special hand/paw shakes too perchance?
