Feeling a little chicken?

Thinking of getting chickens. I love free range eggs, and liking the idea of getting eggs on demand from my garden.

Not sure what the cat would think though, but certainly know what my neighbour would think!

Anyone had / keep chickens here?

Feeling a little chicken, eh? I'm reasonably liberal in my outlook on life, but some posters can get a little Daily Mail so best keep some things to yourself.

Keeping chickens is nice... they take little in the way of maintenance and you do get fresh eggs most of the time.

An ex-girlfriend's parents used to have a 'Good Life' thing going on and did this. It worked well and suited them - living as they did on a hillside in Mid-Wales.

It might just seem a tad naff and chavvy in a housing estate in Wilmslow though.

Chickens are great, if you have the space. They will mess up your lawn if that's where you intend to run them.

Cats will generally chase them around for a bit of fun, but will rarely, if ever kill them.

Don't get a cockerel, otherwise it will fight with the cat and piss off the neighbours.

I wouldn't bother. My parents keep some.

• You will not always get eggs because they stop laying from time to time.
  
• A four foot run is a smaller than I would be happy letting them run around in.
  
• They will be a target for foxes who will kill them in the night.

I would recommend buying organic free range eggs from Waitrose instead.
