My self esteem has hit rock bottom but at least my house isn't going to be repossessed... yet.

If I didn't have a loving wife and a gorgeous 20 month old daughter to consider I'd have gone off the rails by now, I live in hope and just keep applying.

I was an aircraft technician before I went into IT support 6 years ago, I was doing fine up until about 18 months ago but now it looks like a big mistake.

I’m seriously looking into alternatives now, though I have got an interview for a £35k permy comms job close to home.

I’m sure there are plenty of people doing crap jobs just to pay the bills in this market, if there wasn’t a recession and I still found myself doing this I’d be seriously worried.

38 is relatively young. I wouldn't worry - just look for something with demand and get yourself trained up for it via evening class or distance learning. Will probably take 2 or 3 years.
And enjoy your outdoors job for now - there are worse things. You'll become fit and don't have a boss following you around.

I'm not outdoors, just moving and reconfiguring kit at an MoD site.

I’m reading a CCNA course book and dabbling in sharepoint, it’s difficult to know what will be in demand so I’m just covering my options at the moment whilst I decide.

I think a permy role would suit me now as I need to take a path and specialise in something rather than drifting from one support job to the next without any real progression.

C'mon GJ - you're only a lad. Do what you have to do to keep things going and it will get better. Also look at other ways of making a bit of money.
