£12.50 ... you were lucky - I'm delivering white goods for a major household retail chain for the princely sum of £7.50 @ hour. Very hard work and long days, physically demanding but I look at it as been paid to go to the gym and it beats sitting at home in front of the 'puter.Originally posted by gingerjedi View PostYep I've been humping and dumping all morning for £12.50 ph, they would have got an Indian in but they couldn't find one that would get out of bed for that rate.
My self esteem has hit rock bottom but at least my house isn't going to be repossessed... yet.
gotta do what you've gotta do to keep afloat in these times!

Perhaps you have made a mistake - can you return to being an aircraft engineer ? I think that holds better prospects than IT.
IT is now a SunSet Indusrty - been in the industry since 1984 so Ive seen some golden days and waht we have now - fortunately Ism till doing OK - but I think IT is an industry with a great future behind it.
Whatever you do - good luck.

C'mon GJ - you're only a lad. Do what you have to do to keep things going and it will get better. Also look at other ways of making a bit of money.Originally posted by gingerjedi View Post38.
I was an aircraft technician before I went into IT support 6 years ago, I was doing fine up until about 18 months ago but now it looks like a big mistake.
I’m seriously looking into alternatives now, though I have got an interview for a £35k permy comms job close to home.
I’m sure there are plenty of people doing crap jobs just to pay the bills in this market, if there wasn’t a recession and I still found myself doing this I’d be seriously worried.

I'm not outdoors, just moving and reconfiguring kit at an MoD site.Originally posted by sasguru View PostAnd enjoy your outdoors job for now - there are worse things. You'll become fit and don't have a boss following you around.
I’m reading a CCNA course book and dabbling in sharepoint, it’s difficult to know what will be in demand so I’m just covering my options at the moment whilst I decide.
I think a permy role would suit me now as I need to take a path and specialise in something rather than drifting from one support job to the next without any real progression.

Does it involve ... (c'mon, you know what's coming next) ... licking a chutney spoon?

38 is relatively young. I wouldn't worry - just look for something with demand and get yourself trained up for it via evening class or distance learning. Will probably take 2 or 3 years.Originally posted by gingerjedi View Post38.

How old are you?Originally posted by gingerjedi View PostSC cleared too, the current job market is a fliping joke.
If I didn't have a loving wife and a gorgeous 20 month old daughter to consider I'd have gone off the rails by now, I live in hope and just keep applying.

When I worked with the Civil Service, they had a 'rule' that they could go home ½ day earlier the day before a "bank holiday".Originally posted by alreadypacked View PostWhen I worked in Zurich they had a rule that you could go home 1 hour earlier the day before a "bank holiday". Very efficient. But I'm further south - we just wait for the manager to leave around lunch then sneak out. I think in about 45 mins I can do one......Originally posted by alreadypacked View PostWhen I worked in Zurich they had a rule that you could go home 1 hour earlier the day before a "bank holiday".
