If we were not all cowards, we might work out that the best option is to spend it while you can, enjoy life more, and go when your time is up.

There are some Americans who do just that: the idea is that half of health care costs are incurred in the last 6 months of life, and it's pretty low quality life anyway, so they just don't take health insurance. Expect a shorter life but a merrier one.

      expat,

are there any books on this subject that you can recommend ?

the websites are ok, but I'm old fashioned and prefer books

or shall I just go on amazon and pick a few and see what they contain ?

      thanks,

      Milan.

Couldn't you pay in advance? Life membership, so to speak?

Would you have to book a date?
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

I think that's a pretty good rule of thumb. To produce an income of X/year for N years, you need C=X*N capital.

Assume any return you get on C will just keep X in line with inflation.

              Eg. £15k/year for 30 years = £450k

I still think if you want to retire in your 50's and be comfortable you're gonna need a total pot of low single digit millions

"comfortable" covers a huge spectrum. I took a sabatical a few years ago which has turned into retirement. My wife and I live comfortably on £1200/month but I know many would view that as borderline poverty.

The reality is - while you are still healty enough to enjoy your money - do so -for no-one knows what the future holds and no financial investment return is guaranteed.

If today is joyful why be concerned for the future which never arrrives ?

Some of you appear to live in the Age of Anxiety - but thats not for me .

Once I have mortgate paid off and a couple of BTL's I plan to get a local, lower paying job in IT. Maybe sysadmin for a small college or school or something. I am one of the sad bastards that actually enjoy IT.

Why bother with Dignitas? Save yourself (or your offspring) 4.5k and use the Humber Bridge instead.
