Typical pretentious snobbery. For most people, books are about story-telling, not scintillating writing as art.
Agreed - Imagine never reading Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit or The Phillip Pullman Books.... what an awful shame.

In the same vein, I recommend Sabriel by Garth Nix. It's the first book of a cracking trilogy

Would rather set fire to my own face than experience any Harry Potter or LOTR but if that's what floats your boat fair enough.

Edit : to answer the "how do you know" - was subjected to HP by ex wife and tried reading LOTR - just doesn't appeal.

I can see how Hobbits = nice characters for kids, but Orcs?

              Kids grow up

They'll have been teenagers by this point.

+1 on the books for kids. A good story is a good story, does it matter who it's aimed at?

Personal fave author is Dr Seuss. Says it all really

Hmm that explains a lot - One of his sons was the priest at my school - Father Tolkien - and he banned his fathers books from the school library. To this day I've never read the hobbit. I've read LOTR several times though
I'm sorry, but I'll make no apologies for this

Hold on, a priest banning the Bible?

                  Rock on!

Exactly.... it's all about personal taste. A lot of people like Pratchett and I have to say I'd rather gouge my own eyes out with a spoon that read that drivel... but it's a personal choice.

Enjoyed it, but a bit of an anti climax for me I'm afraid.

I was distracted a little by the girl sat next to me, who spent the whole film rustling popcorn and farting loudly (no it wasn't Pogle Jr)

                      Anyone else seen it?

We're all looking forward to G-Force next
Yeah, I've seen a girl who rustles popcorn and farts loudly.
