There many issues here and IMO the Aspergers is the least of them.

There is every chance the Americans will prosecute him as a terrorist. I mean they almost have to due to the terms of the extradition treaty. He is not a terrorist. If he is convicted as one they might as well sign his death sentence too.

What he did was walk into an unprotected network, mess around with some files, leave some stupid messages. That's a crime. Around the level of criminal damage. The DOD admins have escalated this to cover there own lazy butts. Believe me if you think the military is like TV - 24 or CSI - you are dead wrong.

Lastly for now, if you think the Americans would reciprocate this extradition in any way you are also, dead wrong.
    Bored.

... and the other thing is, with our weak judicial system and the Human Rights Act, if we don't allow extradition, any future 'real' terrorist could avoid extradition by saying that they must be treated the same as this guy.

Yeah, maybe it is a little bit, what I'm trying to get across is that I think it's far too easy to find some doctor that will sign anything. I bet you I could find some renowned expert who would be quite happy to testify he doesn't have classic aspergers symptoms. My expert against your expert.

            Article

Well if nothing else the article certainly bolsters the theory that politics is showbiz for ugly people.

              True.

That having been said, that's why the WHO have specific guidance on the diagnosis, to whit:

              F84.5 Asperger's syndrome
A disorder of uncertain nosological validity, characterized by the same type of qualitative abnormalities of reciprocal social interaction that typify autism, together with a restricted, stereotyped, repetitive repertoire of interests and activities. It differs from autism primarily in the fact that there is no general delay or retardation in language or in cognitive development. This disorder is often associated with marked clumsiness. There is a strong tendency for the abnormalities to persist into adolescence and adult life. Psychotic episodes occasionally occur in early adult life.

Actually, you've been buying into all the propoganda that this guys supporters are spouting. Gary McKinnon has been charged with seven counts of Fraud and Related Activity in Connection with Computers

Reads a bit differently to your description of the incident. He also has form as a hacker. Incidentally, the states offered him a plea deal:

He was offered a "plea bargain" in which he was told that he would probably serve three to four years, of which six to 12 months would be served in a low security US prison, after which he would likely be allowed to be transferred to jail in the UK and released after serving only half the sentence

The guys guilty, he should do his time. Simple.

My son was diagnosed with Aspergers recently amd your description of Aspergers isn't what I recognise in my son. In my son I see a boy struggling to make sense of things which he simply can't comprehend. He's not some window licking dribbling wreck, he's academically very bright with a cracking sense of humour but struggles to understand a number of things that most people take for granted.

I think you would be suprised... look at the difficulty BP is having and has had in getting his son diagnosed.

I'm not saying anything to it or from it in this case (UK V USA) as I know very little about it.
