Where they get this idea I cannot imagine.

When in the left-most lane, to the left is a completely empty hard shoulder. When in the middle lane you have the company car drivers (and me) tearing down the outside lane and you are one lane nearer the other side of the road.

If I'm going to have a blowout, I'd rather be anywhere than the middle lane.
My all-time favourite Dilbert cartoon, this is: BTW, a Dumpster is a brand of skip, I think.

Very true Peoplesoft bloke re cruise, but at least we have the right foot override option when encountering these dimwits.

For some sizable chunks of my drive down to Client there are huge roadworks (28-25 M1 which has to be 15+ miles plus several others) with 50 mph average speed checks so cruise, lane changing and alert observation to dodge the morons is the order of the day.

I agree Mr Cranium I'm mystified by it too, if something went wrong the middle lane would be my least favourite option. The sad fact is many people actually believe that they're too good/flash/posh to be amongst the filthy truckers to the left or are plain bone idle and feel it's easier to sit in the middle lane so effectively reducing the road from 3 to 2 lanes.

Snipers on the matrix signs that take out middle laners when the left is empty would be my favoured option.

SPECs received Home Office Type Approval for cars changing lanes in 2007.

Also, as that article points out, it was never the case that the cameras "didn't work" if you changed lanes; merely that, until the relevant tests were passed, they could not be used for enforcement purposes in that case.

You obviously believe all of the propaganda.

Indeed - in one set of roadworks I was (unsurprisingly) passed by a bloke on a motorbike. I think he was showing remarkable restraint considering he wasn't going that much faster. Of course, there's no way he could have got past Cyberspeedytory

I've never had to worry about the average speed

Every time I go through those things - there is always so much traffic I'm lucky if I average half the speed.
