Tell Americans about the "Gappes" (large birds) that lived in the tube lines in the 1920s. As the trains came along the line, the Gappes would fly in front of the train and burst onto the station.

That's where the tannoy "Mind the Gappe" comes from - the birds are (sadly) extinct, it's just kept these days for historical effect.
