Spaceflight, whilst an important measure of human success, is surely not the only measure?

Personally speaking I think that the measure of humanities successes is perhaps a little closer to home and might contain a combination of:

- % of countries at wars (internal or external)
- number of infant deaths / 1000 population
- number of deaths due to malnutrition or dehydration / 1000 population
- % of deaths caused by communicable diseases
- % growth in planetary population
- % growth in planetary agricultural output

I'm by no means an agrarian but it's more important that a population should be able to feed itself, surely?

How much food and water do we all really need?
If everyone ate what they're bodies needed and not what they wanted there would be enough for everyone.
We can build gas pipes that are 000's of miles long but we can't do the same for water. Come on.
