Nobody advocates speeding in built up areas, but bear in mind speed cameras are not always the answer. For example the M11 speed camera has had a negative effect on accidents since introduced. Areas where cameras have been removed have seen accidents fall. Warning signs have proved more effective (see swindon). Clearly, it's more safe to watch the road than your speedometer, not to mention the danger of suddenly braking motorists
Even though I don't deny that the speed cameras are there to make money and in some places accidents have increased, however... speed does kill as does sudden breaking.

I know devices that know where speed cameras are and warns you using GPS are fine, but I thought things that actually detect cameras had been made illegal.
AFAIK, they always have been illegal.

Illegal to use, not to own, or sell though.

Hence plod don't normally prosecute unless they actually pull you over and you have one plugged in on your dashboard.

I have one also. Very useful.

Camera detectors are not illegal, but camera JAMMERS are. Important difference.

There is an argument that detectors are actually important for safety, as it will technically alert you to a hazard ahead, since cameras are meant to only be sited in areas with a history of accidents.

Is the possible hazard of being caught for speeding a real driving hazard ?

Rubbish! Speed Camera Detectors are not illegal to own or use. Laser jammers \ scramblers are not illegal to own since they can be also be used to operate garage doors.

They may be considered illegal if used to affect a laser speed gun used by the police in the course of their duties ie to measure vehicle speed. To my knowledge, there has only been one successful prosecution in the UK over the use of a laser jammer by a driver.

The government did announce plans late in the last parliament to lay legislation to make the use of speed camera detectors and laser jammers illegal but, this failed when the election was called and has not been re introduced.

Not Rubbish. They were deemed to be illegal under the Wireless Telegraphy Act (1949) as they "intercept" a message sent by an electronic device (the radar signal).

However, doing a bit of Googling, a case was lost back in the late 90's, so police will no longer prosecute because of precedent and so far the government has not introduced legislation to clarify things.
