Is HD overrated?

Or people with big living rooms. Or people with tunnel vision."See, you think I give a tulip. Wrong. In fact, while you talk, I'm thinking; How can I give less of a tulip? That's why I look interested." -
Tis true but that's a good thing if you want a big movie experience, no good upsetting the neighbours with a 500w gunfight/car chase when you're watching on a 14" portable.Originally posted by VectraMan View Post
It seems to me the biggest reason for HD is not to get better quality, it's to go bigger without the loss of quality.
Having said that HD is overrated, it’s not life changing like Sky+.Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave JohnsonComment

I read somewhere about HD4 - which is effectively 4080p (if current best is 1080p)
it was actually to do with Gran Turismo 5 (or 6 or 7)and how this will look best in that resolution
Have a been at the mushrooms again or has anyone else heard?Comment

Incidentally I bought mine from John lewis and they lived up to the hype; knowledgeable staff and the set comes with a 5 years guarantee. Cheaper than Amazon too. A 5 year guarantee seems quite optimistic until you factor in that its technological lifespan, of about 2 years, is probably going to be less than its mean failure period of about 3 years (made up figures).Comment

I have HD video cameras for the bicycle races, and being able to zoom in on the image from the top of a hill to riders a couple of kilometers away is quite something.Originally posted by Platypus View PostRemember that Sky isn't 1080 HD anyway, it's 700 ish
AFAIK the only 1080 HD sources are Blu Ray and some video games.
Correct me if I'm wrong but that's my understanding.
Many of the channels over here now come in both formats. Although it is true that if the source has been upscaled you don't win much, but when the source is HD you can take a pepsi challenge on it.Insanity: repeating the same actions, but expecting different results.

I've not bothered with HD yet and judging by this thread I think I've probably made the right decision.
I'll wait for the technology to improve and the standards to settle down.Comment

Sky Hd
The picture quality of SKY HD is much better than Scart based stuff even on SD channels. It's like any other HI-FI related matter the source is the most important thing. It is better to have a HD, Blu-ray, HDMI source and a cheaper telly.Comment
